Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling: Level 5

Next course dates: To be announced

Full cost: To be announced

This course is designed for candidates who want to work as self-employed counsellors in independent practice. It will teach trainees how to work with chronic and enduring mental health and relational needs, providing both theory and practical skills.

To take this course, you must have obtained the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling or its equivalent.

Key points about the course:

  • Trainees need to have a minimum of 40 hours of personal therapy by the end of the course. This can include hours undertaken before the start of the course, but at least 10 hours of personal therapy must be undertaken during the training itself.
  • Trainees need to complete a minimum of 60 hours of formally-contracted one-to-one counselling with adults, including conducting client assessments. To achieve this, candidates will be given guidance and help in obtaining local placements where they can see clients.
  • Trainees need to undertake supervision of their counselling work, in the form of either group or one-to-one supervision. The appropriate level of supervision will be discussed during the course.
  • Trainees will need to produce a portfolio of written work to evidence their understanding of key concepts, including theory and ethics. Trainees also need to write an assessed case study on a client (3,000-3,500 words).

The diploma encourages critical thinking and equips counsellors to work with issues of discrimination and oppression, including race, gender, sexuality, disability and other issues.

To maximise learning, we hold small class sizes, ensuring personal attention and tailored support from our tutors.

This course is supported by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB).
